Teaching

Dance

Sarah Hopkin’s classes start with grounded movement on the floor focused on finding release and ease in movement with flowing energy and momentum. She then builds to upbeat exercises that use modern dance techniques to move through space and groove to unusual time signatures. Sarah likes to focus on how movement can relate to space and how it can create a feeling of joy and sense of community. Her exercises and class structure have been inspired by many of her own instructors - her largest influences being Darryl Tracy, Peggy Baker, Yvonne Coutts, and Patricia Miner. Sarah’s main goal is to have everyone leave class feeling energized and connected to the other dancers in the room.

Sarah’s passion for teaching began when she was working as a demonstrator for Peggy Baker at Canada’s National Ballet School. It inspired her to begin her own teaching practice at The School of Dance in Ottawa in 2016. She taught contemporary dance and choreographed on the students at The School of Dance for five years in the professional ballet stream to dancers ages eleven to seventeen. In 2018 Sarah began to teach morning class for the post-secondary Contemporary Dance Diploma Programme at the School of Dance under the direction of Sylvie Desrosiers. Sarah then moved to Halifax for three years where she taught at Halifax Dance in their Intensive Training Program, the Maritime Conservatory for Performing Arts, and morning professional classes, community classes, and senior chair classes for Mocean Dance. Sarah is now back living in Ottawa and will resume teaching at The School of Dance.

Barre Fitness

Sarah Hopkin is also a barre fitness instructor. She trained in The Dailey Method technique in Ottawa and taught at a studio there for five years. Sarah found that taking barre fitness classes was an excellent compliment to her dance career in terms of cross training and injury prevention. After seeing the positive impact it had on her own life, she decided to become an instructor. The focus on functional movement training, alignment and engagement is healthy for the longevity of joint health and ease of movement for everyone. She loves how accessible and effective barre fitness is for everyone no matter their age or fitness/movement background. Sarah’s classes are known for their upbeat vibes and finding joy in the challenging moments.

Sarah now offers personal training using the barre method for one on one or small group sessions. Please feel free to email Sarah for options.
